The Port Con Maine 2004 Experience

Last year I wrote a review of the con and since this year I actually participated in the con, I thought that writing a review would be rather...lame. So instead, I bring you the Port Con Maine 2004 Experience as viewed in glorious Shiva-vision, complete with daily highlights and pictures! (There's captions on each picture, just hover to read. ^_^)

Day One - June 18th, 2004

- Waiting 45 minutes to get in. This was cool. While waiting in line sucks. I was so happy to see how many people were eager to get into the con for grand opening. It was a hoot. I'm not sure how many people were waiting last year (because I got their late ~_~) but this year seemed pretty impressive.

- New panel room! Forest view, I mean rubble view. While we got to look at a pile of debris outside, the room itsself was great! It was out of the way and nice and quiet, so you knew that the people who were there, wanted to be there.

- Weer'd vs. Ace. All I can take away from this was Weer'd saying "You can eat my @$$ in a sandwhich." Nuff said.

- Truck stop horror stories. Poor Nami! But you made it to the con and gave six hours of presentations. So woot for you!

- Being sniffed. Yep, so we're in the midst of the drawing tips panel and Dave from paradox-lost.com is giving his, I and Nami and I are talking about hair. The professionalism NEVER dies. ^_^

- Being in my first panels! This year I got to co-run/be a part of two panels. One was on computer graphics, the other was on drawing tips. I want to give a big thanks to everyone who came to see them. It meant so much to me to see so many people come. I tried my best and hoped that I did not let you down.

Day Two - June 19th, 2004

- COSPLAY! Cosplay was huge at this year's con. We managed to score a seat in the very limited seating cosplay showing and I almost fell out of my chair when I realized that there were more people in the cosplay showing than watching it. This year's cosplay was fab! The costumes were really well done and it was so hard to pick the winners...I am glad that I did not have to do it. My personal favs were the Star Fox, Harle, the Final Fantasy people (Tidus, Lulu, Auron, Riku and Dagger) They didn't go on as a group, but they were still done well.

- Another cosplay highlight was Nami from seraphic-blue.net taking anime requests. Her rendition of Hamtaro brought tears to my eyes. (I was laughing THAT hard).

- MoJo (Muy Muvesto's writer) ran day two of his gaming event which involved using the Nintendo Power Glove. This wrist cramper killed even the most skilled gamer's and I think everyone who used it now has carpultunnel!

- Selling stuff! Thank you to everyone who bought prints or sketches! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have funded my Port Con Maine 2005 badge!

- The artists alley was awsome! I spent most of my Saturday there and could not be happier. Everyone was so nice and I got to sit next to MangaPunkSai the anime gallery admin. So I got to eye her art up close and personal! Woot for that! Thanks to everyone who came and saw me there and humored me by taking a business card! The alley is swank!

- Harry Potter yaoi. Yeah...nuff said right? Saturday morning I recieved a request to draw some Harry Potter yaoi. I would have done it, only I've never really drawn yaoi and didn't want to take the chi's five bucks to draw something that looked bad and not yaoi tastick.

Day Three - June 20th, 2004

- Squid yaoi! Yaoi overran the con this year (Call it a Northeast fetish, call it what you will) and because I am very ignorant about the world of Yaoi (Yes I know what it is, but I don't exactly have a massive stack of yaoi manga/anime in the corner) I decided to be silly and request silly yaoi. One request was for squid yaoi. Think that's bad...our pirate pal at the con actually started explaining how it would work. @_@

- Rambeard and his gun stories! MoJo thought that it would be funny to put the con pirate's (Weer'd Beard) face on Rambo's body...thusly Rambeard! He printed out the picture and Beard wore it proudly the last day of the con. We were also intrigued by gun stores and loud noises and lots of swearing. Way to go Beard!

- Boffa-related groin injuries. Sunday was beautiful, so a lot of people were outside playing with boffa weapons. Now I thought that because they were padded, they were relatively safe. Well after seeing a few guys drop to their knees after taking some crotch shots from a padded kendo stick, I figured that I'd just watch (and laugh) this year.

- The Nintendo Power Pad. Day three of the Obscure Gaming Triathlon meant playing the Track and Field game with the power pad. One lucky gamer made it to the quarter way mark in like 45 seconds. That was swank! Luckily...no one died using the power pad.

- The DOODLE-A-THON! Always a great way to close out the con. This year we were restricted to crayons. It pained me, but I used them...and boy did they suck. We had such great topics as Final Fantasy, Old School Nintendo and Animal Sidekicks. I drew Quina and Dagger from FFIX and then a green warp pipe!

Con MVP: NAMI for just being awsomely funny!!!!!
Runner-up: Weer'd Beard for pirate tales and this wonderful case of scurvy.

Long live Port Con Maine! I wish the con best of luck at it's new location (The Sheraton baby!) and I know I'll be there...hopefully with some of you reading this.
